Spinal
Tumors-Location, Symptoms and Treatment
In Dr. Koshes’ LMT continuing education class,
“Clinical Neurology and Orthopedics for the Massage Therapist,”
he reviews commonly diagnosed musculoskeletal conditions with
protocols for treatment. In his class he discusses spinal tumors.
These tumors may be primarily located in the spine or metastasize
from another location, ie., prostate, testicles or the breast.
The patient’s past history is extremely important. It may indicate
a previous history of treatment for cancer with no explainable
reason for their current symptoms.
The patient suffering from a spinal tumor generally
will appear constitutionally sick. They may report unexplained
weight loss, night sweats, fatigue and an inability to get comfortable
in any position. Their pain can be localized to the spine or refer
into an extremity depending on what tissues are involved.
This LMT CEU course teaches that first aid treatment consisting
of “PRICES” which stands for; protection of the injury, rest of
the injury, ice, compression, elevation and support for the injury
can be performed to attempt to give the patient some pain relief.
Once a condition like this is suspected, however, a medical referral
is normal protocol. Massage therapy directly over or adjacent
to the tumor should be avoided as not to increase circulation
to the tumor area potentially causing tumor cells to be spread
throughout the patient’s body.
A well-known LMT CEU Instructor, Dr. Koshes offers a number of
Continuing Education Classes for Massage Therapists including
Advanced Training For LMT's, and Florida CEU Programs For LMT's.
His LMT CEU classes are accredited by the Florida State Board
Of Massage Therapy.
