Learn About Osteoporosis-Definition, Symptoms and Treatment

In Dr. Koshes’ online Massage Therapy course, “Clinical Neurology and Orthopedics for the Massage Therapist,” he reviews commonly diagnosed musculoskeletal conditions with protocols for treatment. In his class he discusses osteoporosis which is a condition where the calcium levels in bone are diminished. This can be caused from the normal affects of aging, early menopause, long term effects of steroid drug therapy or a poor diet. Females are involved 2:1 over males. When the spine is involved, the patient can develop a characteristic posture of the thoracic spine referred to as Hyperkyphosis. These patients can be subject to bone fractures from trivial traumas, like rolling over in bed or stepping off a curb. When a fracture occurs in the thoracic spine, it will produce an anterior angulation of the kyphosis called a Gibbus Deformity.

Symptoms that can be produced can include localized pinpoint tenderness directly over the vertebral level where the fracture has occurred. Generally the patient will described a deep ache within their spine which is aggravated by weight bearing and motion.

The Massage Therapy continuing education class also covers Treatment, which initially should include “PRICES” which stands for; protection of the injury, rest of the injury, ice, compression, elevation and support for the injury. Treatment of this type of injury could take 6-8 weeks. In-office care protocol could include massage treatment, (adjacent to the fracture site but not directly over the fracture), acupuncture, physical therapy, chiropractic, mild to moderate support bracing. Once the fracture has healed recommendations to increase calcium levels should include gentle weight bearing exercise, sunlight which increases the production of Vitamin D which can help in calcium absorption and vitamin therapy. A referral should also be made for a medical evaluation to determine if the patient would be a candidate for hormonal replacement therapy.

Dr. Koshes' online CEU massage therapy training is accredited by the Florida State Massage Therapy Association.
