How Do You Progress Your Clients Through Different Phases Of Rehabilitation
Care? -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Massage Therapists who work in medical
facilities are taking on greater responsibility in total treatment
of their clients. One area of increased use of the Massage Therapist
is in exercise rehabilitation. In Dr. Koshes’ Massage Therapy
online class titled, “Muscles, Rehabilitation And Exercise, “
he covers the commonly used rehabilitation exercise programs of
stretching and strengthening. Topics covered include types of
flexibility/stretching exercises, types of strengthening exercises,
typical applications of the exercise programs in the acute, sub-acute
and chronic phases of care and how to set up an in-office or home
elastic tubing strengthening exercise program.
One area covered in his online course for Massage
Therapy is the explanation of (DOMS) Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness.
DOMS can occur in muscles that have been exercised over the past
24-48 hours and last up to 1-2 days. It is not due to the release
of lactic acid like originally thought but most probably due to
microscopic tears within the muscle fibers that are seen more
frequently with your clients who are performing more “negative”
muscle contractions. Clients who are beginners should avoid the
negative types of contractions to avoid the symptoms of delayed
onset muscle contractions.
