Q And A #1

Q: Dr. Koshes, I am currently licensed to practice massage therapy in New York. Can I take the online continuing education for Massage Therapist courses that you offer to fulfill my CEU requirements?

A: Dear Cindy, Currently my CEU courses are only approved for CEU credits for Florida state Licensed Massage Therapists. In the near future, I will be applying for a national certification for my seminars so that the CEU credits you earn by taking my seminar can be applied towards your New York massage therapy license.

Q And A #2

Q: Dr. Koshes, In your online Massage Therapy class, “Clinical Neurology And Orthopedics For The Massage Therapist,” what type of equipment would I need to purchase to perform the clinical tests you teach?

A: Dear Larry, Surprisingly very little equipment is required to perform all the tests we teach in this LMT CEU course. What is recommended is the massage therapist purchase the following; a reflex hammer, sensory testing pinwheel referred to as a Whartenberg Pinwheel, and a tape measure which is useful to measure the girth of muscles suspected of atrophy. This equipment can easily be purchased at your local medical supply store.

Q And A #3

Q: Dr. Koshes, Your Florida LMT continuing education courses are loaded with information. How would you recommend that I get started incorporating the materials into my massage therapy practice?

A: Dear Lisa, That question is asked frequently, especially at my live seminars that I teach. A student of mine wrote me several weeks after taking one of my seminars with what he did that allowed him to incorporate these new materials into his practice. It was such a great idea that I routinely share this information at my seminars. What he did was put different areas of a seminar onto 4x6 index cards. For example in my modality seminar, he put each modality onto an index card and each week added a new modality to the treatment of his patients, rather than adding all the information at once. Each seminar Lisa can be broken down in that way. I hope this explanation has helped.

Q And A #4

Q: Dr. Koshes, Explain the certification status for your online Massage Therapy certification class “Modality Certification For The Massage Therapist”.
A: Dear Jorge, with each of my Florida licensed Massage Therapist continuing education courses, after taking the examination at the end of the course, the massage therapist is granted their CEU hours. In developing the modality seminar I wanted to offer an additional level of certification because of the extreme technical nature of applying modality therapy to a patient. Therefore, with the modality seminar, the Florida Licensed LMT can not only receive their CEU’s but also achieve a certification status by passing an additional written and laboratory practical examination with a grade of 80% or better. This can be accomplished by setting up an appointment at my office in Sarasota, Florida to take the additional testing.

Q And A #5

Q: Dr. Koshes, Do I need to take an entire Massage Therapist certification seminar at one sitting once I log onto your website?
A: Dear Carol: Each one of the online Massage Therapy training classes are timed to give you the exact number of CEU hours for the course you enrolled in. When you begin the course the timer will start and end when you end a particular lesson. You can begin and end lessons many times without loosing the timer settings. Once you finally finish the course work the timer will end and then you can take the examination and receive your CEU credits.

Q And A #6

Q: Dr. Koshes, Once I complete your online Massage Therapy certification course, what do I receive that lets me know that I passed and have received my CEU hours?
A: Dear Jeff, Your test is graded immediately on the computer so you will have real time knowledge that you passed the course. That information is then forwarded to my office where a CEU certificate will be printed and then mailed to the address provided by you.

Q And A #7

Q: Dr. Koshes, In your online Massage Therapy class, “Muscles, Rehabilitation And Exercise, “ you talk about using surgical tubing for the resistance exercises. What type should I buy?
A: Dear Justine, I purchase 50’ rolls of bulk surgical tubing from my medical supply store in town. I always get one roll that is thick to provide greater resistance and one that is thinner for patients who might initially be weaker. The tubing is cut into 5’ sections and sold to the patient. There are many different brands available for exercise and surgical tubing. The brand I use is made by the company, Kent Elastomer in Kent, Ohio.

Q And A #8

Q: Dr. Koshes, After completing your online education for Massage Therapy, how would I charge my clients for the added testing that I might do with them during their massage treatment?

A: Dear Marcia, In Florida where I practice, Florida state licensed Massage Therapists charge for the time they spend with a patient rather than how a physician or physical therapist might charge using a treatment code. Therefore, if you spend an additional 1/2 hour assessing a patient’s flexibility or strength along with 1 hour of massage technique the charge in time for that days total treatment would be 1 1/2 hours. In matters like this, it is always best for you to contact your state’s Department Of Regulation for a legal clarification should there be additional questions.

Q And A #9

Q: Dr. Koshes, I have enjoyed taking your online Massage Therapy certification programs. Do you ever teach these seminars in a live format?
A: Dear Joe, All of the LMT CEU Classes that are on my website started as live seminars which I have presented in several cities in Florida. To schedule a live seminar in your community I require at least 10 prepaid therapists and an available room to present the course. For further information concerning live LMT CEU seminar programs contact my office at the numbers listed on the website.
Q And A #10

Q: Dr. Koshes, Now that I have acquired this new knowledge, how do I fit in my multidisciplinary office which has medical physicians, chiropractic physicians, physical and massage therapists?

A: Dear Kari-Jo, Each office is structured differently when it comes to patient care. In the multidisciplinary office you describe more than one health care professional can deliver the same type of care. It will be up to your office manager’s division of services that will determine how you function. For example you may be allowed to perform some of the clinical testing of your massage therapy clients but muscle strength testing could only be performed by the physical therapist. If you are uncertain as to what would be allowed, talk with your direct supervisor. It is best to follow the specific rules that have been developed by your office manager for your clinic.
