Improve
Your Effectiveness Of Your Neurological And Orthopedic Assessment
Of Your Patients.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The proper neurological and orthopedic
assessment of your patient is important in determining if your
client’s condition can be treated effectively through massage
therapy care. It also allows you to document their progress in
an objective rather than subjective way. In Dr. Koshes’ massage
therapy continuing education course titled, “Clinical Neurology
and Orthopedics For The Massage Therapist, “ he reviews several
neurological and orthopedic test procedures that can be used very
effectively in a massage therapist practice. Neurological assessments
covered include; deep tendon reflex testing, sensory testing and
muscle testing. Orthopedic assessments reviewed include PROM testing
for the cervical and lumbar spinal regions, spinal and muscle
palpation techniques and specialized assessment tests for the
cervical and lumbar spinal regions.
An example of a specialized test for the cervical
spine covered in this online Massage Therapy training would be
the Shoulder Depression Test. This is where the patient’s head
is tilted and held to one side while the massage therapist puts
pressure downward on the opposite shoulder. The test is then repeated
on the opposite side. Pain that the patient may experience in
the neck or the top of the shoulder is indicative of muscle spasms
on the side of the shoulder pressure. This test can be repeated
by the massage therapist intermittently through the course of
the patient’s care to measure progress and effectiveness from
their massage therapy care.
