Massage Therapists-How do You Determine Your
Clients Muscular Strength?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Assessment of muscle strength is performed through the technique referred to as Muscle Testing. Muscle testing can be used to determine the level of neurological injury or the strength of an injured/weak muscle. In Dr. Koshes’ Massage Therapy online class titled, titled, “Muscles, Rehabilitation And Exercise,” he covers the technique of muscle testing with the topics; qualities of a good muscle tester, weakness in muscle function, isolation in muscle testing, the process of muscle testing, substitution during muscle testing, grading muscle strength and the muscle testing positions for all the major joints of the body.

Isolation in muscle testing is essential for accurately assessing your client’s muscle strength. This is especially important when testing a muscle that crosses multiple joints. A clinical example would be testing hip joint extension with the patient’s leg straight vs. with their knee bent. With the leg is straight the test includes strength from both the gluteal and hamstring muscles. It is more proper to test hip extension with the knee bent, thereby, limiting the hamstring contraction and isolating the gluteal muscles.

For more information on how to determine your client’s muscular strength, contact Dr. Koshes on his LMT Continuing Education website, www.koshes.com

A well-known CEU Instructor For LMT's, Dr. Koshes offers a number of Continuing Education Classes for Massage Therapists including Advanced Training For LMT's, and Florida CEU Programs For LMT's. His CEU classes are accredited by the Florida State Board Of Massage Therapy.
